Authenticity cannot be constrained by geography or
by the passport of the composer, performer, or
audience. Authenticity is a spiritual agreement
among all the parties involved, and therefore
defies definition by anyone outside the shared
experience, looking in.

This goes for Italian food as well as Southern
Music. It's certainly true for religion, where
trying to determine authenticity has gotten us
all in a heap of trouble.

For the record, I am one of Dr. Bertrand's
undergraduate students and a Jewish, Yankee,
professional songwriter of country music for the
past 28 years.
